Diskless

Powering massively decentralised storage

Enabling modern storage stacks

Background:

Diskless provides a distributed data storage solution that is both secure and scalable. Diskless was acquired by Outroll in 2024 to provide a more robust storage solution for Outroll's own ventures and clients. Diskless enables servers and desktop users to store data on a network of computers, rather than on a single server or device. This allows for a more secure and scalable storage solution, as data is distributed across multiple devices and locations.

A full rebuild of the core technology with Go:

The first step in the acquisition process was to rebuild the core technology of Diskless using Go. This was done to improve the performance, scalability, and security of the storage solution. The new implementation was designed to be more efficient and reliable, with a focus on speed and data integrity. The new implementation also included support for modern storage technologies with a focus on containerization, microservices, and databases.

Minimizing data transfer and storage costs:

One of the main challenges faced during the rebuild process was minimizing data transfer and storage costs. Diskless was designed to be a cost-effective storage solution, and the new implementation needed to maintain this cost-effectiveness while improving performance and scalability. To address this challenge, we implemented a number of optimizations to reduce data transfer and storage costs, including data deduplication, compression, and encryption.

The future of Diskless:

Diskless was primarily used as a niche tool by a small number of clients, and will be promoted to a wider audience as part of our acquisition. Our goal is to keep expanding the capabilities of Diskless to make it a more robust and versatile storage solution for a wider range of use cases. We are also exploring the possibility of integrating Diskless with other Outroll ventures such as VestaCP to improve the overall storage and data management capabilities of our products.
